ON THE BACK BURNER

I have no idea what day this is, but I will take a chance on it being Tuesday ? Today , I attended a Ulpan Chanukah party. In itself that is not that spectacular. But what was so special, so moving, so emotional, is what happened at the beginning. With over 300 students [ and me] in attendance , the First candle was lite. Then ,one by one, people came up and lite their candle and announced their name and where they came from. Paris, Marseille, Panama, Mexico, Texas, Teaneck,N.J.,Iran,Morocco, Guatemala,Switzerland, Holland, Russia, Poland, auschwitz, Chilean, Brazil,Turkey,Oak Park. If you are Jewish, you can understand how difficult this move was for most of them. Even in this day, when we take so many freedoms for granted, many of these people came with their government's making it very difficult for them to stay or to leave.Seeing all of these people be so happy to be in Israel ,lighting a candle in the place that the miracle happened and is celebrated ,just made the tears run down my check.Later, I found out that I wasn't the only one who had this emotional response. My Kleenex is still damp.
