ON THE BACK BURNER

October 11 One thing that I do miss when I think of fall is the October Fest at Burghof's Restaurant in Chicago. Sadly, the restaurant closed before we moved away. It was a Chicago landmark. Downtown ,old, full of Chicago traditions, the number one liquor license for Cook County. The place that visitors came to for lunch or dinner. Theirs is the only Beer Festival I have ever gone too. They made their own beer for the October Fest. The street was blocked off for the crowds. You know they had clout when a whole city block in the busiest section of Chicago is closed for a restaurant function. We would stand at high counters and eat and drink German sausages and German beer. I can taste it still. We would often go to Burghof's for dinner after going to the Chicago Art Museum. It was a short walk away. They had the best rye bread in town. We would add a loaf to our dinner bill and take it home for more enjoyment. I was a little disappointed when I learned that it was Rosen's Rye Bread. Do they sell that any place else. I need to check on that. But Burghof's is only a nice memory now. Non of their younger family members wanted to take it over. And you can't give a tradition to just anyone.
