ON THE BACK BURNER

I am reminded of my Mother, absolutely never leaving the house without makeup. I had this thought when I put on makeup for a luncheon date that I had. It sure does make you look better. Why don't I do this every time before I go out.? No excuse. It's just so easy not to. What you see is what you get, except occasionally. My sister had a Mother in Law that would drive her husband to his office every morning. She never dressed, but put her fur coat on over her night gown. That was in case she got in an accident and had to get out of the car. Or saw someone she knew from another car. She laughed about this, but she wore that fur coat Monday through Friday. The fur coat story reminds me of the High Holy Days in New Orleans. No matter how early they came in the fall, if you owned a fur coat, you wore it. Considering that our shul had no air conditioning in those days, and the women sat upstairs, no wonder some passed out during the lengthily service. In those days, we came in and out, talked, never were on the same page as the Rabbi or Cantor, if we followed at all,and we spent time visiting with relatives and being shown off to our parents friends who saw us twice a year. Gosh, that was fun.
