ON THE BACK BURNER

When I was a kid kid, like in early grade school, I had a friend ,Ann Rausch. I went to her house often. Now that I think about it, she never came to mine. She had Winnie the Pooh books and books about "make belief". We spent hours rewriting fairy tales . We spent whole Saturdays doing this, with a pencil on lined paper. I never had my own books. We went to the library. I did not read "Fairy Tales". I read "Gone With the Wind ", after my Mother finished it. We read comic books. Wonder Woman was a winner in our house. When I think of how much my Mother knew in only a short time in this country, is now amazing to me. At the time, I wanted her to be more like Mrs Rausch. More white bread than rye bread. My Mother read, spoke (with a French accent) and wrote English. She did math. I just never appreciated how quickly she adapted to America. I was first generation American. That did not mean anything to me then, but it does now.
