ON THE BACK BURNER

I just saw an ad for a TV series that gives a lot of money to some family and tells them that they can keep some of it, all of it or give it away. I have no idea what else is involved but I know what I would do. It's a no brainer for me. I have always said that if I win the lottery , there are some "gifts" that I would make. I will give our Congregation a new roof. If I am going to give such a substantial gift , I would like some recognition for doing this. I know that giving anonymously is the Jewish way, but I wouldn't mind just a little bit of recognition. I would write my last name in colored shingles on the roof. You see this a lot on barn roofs. The farmers' family name is spelled out in a different colored shingle. It shows pride in ownership. I wouldn't feel as if I owned our congregation, but I would feel good about being able to do this. And you could see it from the air ! I have a last name with a lot of letters. This feeling would last as long as the roof does. Which is how it should be. By the time the roof is dried out and leaking, it will be time for a new generation of members to replace the roof. That's the cycle of life , both for people and roofs. I'm going to buy that ticket mañana.
