ON THE BACK BURNER

The nicest thing happened when our mini van decided that it might like to explode. The indicator for the oil came on and would not stop with the bell ringing. It did concern me because I have a problem with mechanical and electronic things. My preferred method is to hit them when they don't work. That doesn't work with people or with cars, so I had to pull into a gas station. I did figure out how to open the hood, but not where to put that stick thing that supports it. Bob, who had a spark of his old self, had run into the station to get oil. How he knew to do this must be a man thing that was in his memory bank. While I stood there holding the hood up, a burly guy , with tatts all over his arms, sleeveless ''t'shirt ,and in an opened jeep pulled into the next space. He and his wife asked if they could help. I told him that I had no idea what I was doing but here's the story. He put the support thing in the right place and opened up a tab that said "oil". It was completely empty. That's when he told me I was very near frying the motor. Bob came out with the wrong weight oil. Even oil has to watch it's weigh, it seems. So he went back in for the correct weight. The guy and I started talking and , small world, his son was stationed at Keesler Air Force Base. That is where Bob was stationed when we met. My new friend had tears in his eyes when he said that this son , who expected to make the military his career, had a calling to be a minister. They were tears of pride. I hope that I said all of the right things to him because he was so proud of his son. He filled the oil opening with a lot of oil and I thanked him for helping me. He said that he was a retired law enforcer .. I guess that meant police man , from New Jersey. I really like people from New Jersey. That was a meeting that lasted, maybe 15 minutes, but we shared some memories, his pride in his son and how much he likes being in Florida. This guy was like a gentle giant. You really shouldn't judge a book by it's cover. Or a burly guy with ttatts.

Well said, Leona, you are so right and thank goodness he was there at the right time and in the right place.

We never know when some angel -- maybe not looking like an angel -- turns out to be someone special!
