ON THE BACK BURNER

New Orleans just knows how to celebrate better than most cities. When I was growing up there,we celebrated all of the Catholic Saints,( it was known as a Catholic city ) Civil War battles, (called The War Between the States ), plus National holidays ( we are Americans), and I threw in the Jewish holidays ( I was Orthodox). Because I was the right age in history, I even went to parades celebrating Generals from the military. I wish now, I could remember who I saw. We got off from school for this, too. It's a wonder I can do math and reading. I did not say spelling and geography. That was a lot of fun days off from school. And that did not include time off when we had a hurricane. The older boys would help fill sand bags to place along the Carrollton Ave levee. That's where St. Charles Avenue made the bend and became Carrollton. We never had snow days. That would have been so much fun ! New Orleans' motto is "Let the Good times roll". It was fun growing up with that attitude. No wonder I still like a day off and if you throw in a parade, I'm on the first row.
