ON THE BACK BURNER

I couldn't understand why my geraniums and hot lips that were planted near the property line fence were doing so well. I seldom watered them and they have been flowering and growing all during this rainless two months that we've had. Today, I figured it out. Our neighbor uses an watering system that must be watering those plants that border the common fence. Great idea and I thank them for it. But I won't tell them. We play a "by the rule book " game of croquet with them. And they keep that part of their yard, nicely grassed and watered. I never knew that there were so many rules to the game. In  Venice, there is a very active croquet club that I see when I drive to the grocery. Everyone  wears white and they look very serious. We don't  have a dress code for our game and there is always a cooler of drinks and snacks to go with the drinks. We aren't rowdy, but there is a lot of laughing and cheering. No one cheats, no one gets " take over" ,but everyone offers a lot of advice on how to hit your ball, or how to hit your ball so that you knock someones ball out of the way. It's a great way to spend a few hours on a Saturday afternoon and my geraniums are doing great.
