ON THE BACK BURNER

I wrote this before the adventure in LA and the strike. It just wouldn't post. The farms , in cities like Salinas and Kilroy, are industries. They are not family farmers. They are corporations. As far as an eye can see until you see a mountain range, something is growing in straight lines, some covered in what looks like aluminum foil, everything green and sterile looking. I can understand why a person , if they could, would chose organic. Organic has a vitality and a personality. The rows and rows of vegetables, although beautiful, look unreal. I just saw a double 18 wheeler filled to the brim with green tomatoes. They will probably be placed in a chamber and forced to ripen so they can be shipped to us . Plastic  green houses go in straight lines for miles. PotaPotties in groups of three are arranged near and far. You can see people picking in the background, but my iPhone camera wouldn't catch the movement and color  of their clothes and hats. Every now and then , you see a Mexican flag unfurled on a piece of farm equipment . There are extensive watering systems spewing out expensive water. I just passed a conveyer belt pouring out what it was separating. The end product was not visible, but the waste was very green. I doubt that the green waste product will be thrown out. Probably give it to the chickens or make it into dog food. I'm going to read Dixie's food label when I get home.
