ON THE BACK BURNER

.Yesterday on our mini road trip, I got to take two ferries. The first ferry had the cars line up according to where they were going. Our ferry made two stops. Like a street car that floats. Cars  going to the first stop, went into the ferry, hood first. But when they got to their stop, they backed out. I could never do that. I can not back up in a straight line. Our stop was the second and final stop. The ride was 33 minutes. I used my stop watch on my iPhone to check it out. The water route is considered part of the DOT, just like a major highway. Our one way ferry ride was $16. I actually don't know if they charge by car or number of riders. You can walk on ( you still pay) ride your bike on or your motorcycle. People and bikers get on and off first, then the cars. These ferries can be very big. Large delivery trucks use the ferries, just as we car people do. PT is a peninsula, but there are many islands around. Returning from Seattle ,we were able to catch a 4:15 ferry. They have schedules and take reservations . Very civilized. We did see a family drama, right in front of our car, as we waited our turn to board. The car held Grandma,a man, his wife and two daughters. The young family must have decided that they needed something to eat or drink, because they left Grandma, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, and took off. It came time for the car to move forward to start the boarding process,  but the family wasn't back. You could tell by grandma's body demeanor and the way see got out of the car, looking around for the family, that she was not happy. She walked around to the drivers side, got in and started the car. The family came running, out of breathe, flushed  and had Grandma get out of the drivers seat and walk around the car to the passenger seat. Her face  was a really grumpy face. My take was that it was grandma's car and this family was visiting because the car had a handicap sign and the car was too small for a family of 5. From our position on the ferry, we could see the iconic space needle and the ferris wheel on the broad walk. A huge cruise ship was in port. The  Norwegian Bliss. One of the largest cruise ships built, it holds 4000 guests. We counted 7 decks and could see the waterslide.  That cruise ship looked bigger than some of the tankers that were moving into the sound. And sailboats looked like toys. I think our ferry had the right of way.
