ON THE BACK BURNER

It's supposed to rain. The sky has been grey all day. I don't get too excited when I read that there is a 40% chance of rain. It has to be above 50 to make a believer of me. So I watered my garden. Every 20 minutes, I move the sprinkler. I place it, go to the faucet and turn it on. Then I check if I put the sprinkler where it will do the best job. Then I go back to the faucet and do this a couple of times so that I am not watering the grass, but the flowers. The grass, which I took such pride in, is straw. Nothing much I can do about it. I have been assured that it will come back, so I don't waste water on it.  I haven't mowed in weeks. Where there is still green grass because the sprinkler just happened  to wet it down, it is 4 or 5 inches tall. I am thinking that keeping it high will protect the roots from drying out. I may be wrong, but that is my thought. I am not a natural gardener. When we had our house in Evanston, I never planted any flowers. We lived there over 25 years and when we sold it, it had the same mulberry tree , same bridal wreath, and same lilac bush as when we moved in. I never even gave the yard a thought. See what Covid did for me. Made me a gardener. I am trying to think positively here.
